Chapter Fourteen

J’nah waited until everyone was seated. “As of now, we are at a state of war readiness. A faction within the council has placed members of their group in key places within the military as well as in strategic civilian posts. We are nearly completely certain that this is the same group behind the illegal trade of Volunteers and now, reliable word has come that they intend to try to suborn Delorit.”

“What?” Duane spluttered. “But how could they? You guys let her swan off to go fly herself off into some faraway sun. What’s their plan? Go after her and say, ‘Hey, mind stopping and join us in our plan to conquer the universe and oh, by the way, it’ll also help us all get rich by selling slaves?’ She’ll blast them from the sky. Well, into atoms floating in space, anyways. That’s if she’s not already spacedust herself by now.”

“They intend to hail her, asking for her assistance to save you, claiming you’d been taken and sold once more,” J’nah informed him gravely. “They are banking on her attachment to you causing her to drop her guard. As far as we know, they are as yet unaware that we know of their plans. I filed a ship to ship combat training scenario plan before leaving the station. Commander J’kloval will be meeting up with his own ship and joining us.”

Duane stared hard at him for a few moments, then looked away. He said nothing, having been stunned into silence.

“I take it this is a cover for us to pursue Delorit ourselves and have Duane reach out to her,” J’nel said.

“Correct.” J’nah cast a sympathetic look at Duane. “Matty is awaiting you in my quarters. He is very eager to see you. Why don’t you allow me to escort you both back there and you can get something to eat while catching up,” J’nah said.

“You let Matty come? Are you crazy? He’s carrying your kids. Why would you even put them in such danger?” Duane sounded very angry.

“He insisted on coming, pointing out that I would be worried the entire time about them. If our enemies figure it out what we were doing, they might try using them for leverage. Station Volunteers and their family members are also aboard. We left no potential hostages or anyone the enemy may see as a source of merchandise behind.” He stood swiftly, wishing to head off the panic attack he could see building within Duane. “It’s all precaution,” he told the human male, making his tone as gentle as possible. We’ll reach Delorit before they do, assuming she’s headed back to her old home system, and you can talk to her, let her know that you’re fine.”

Duane blinked rapidly. “What if I can save her?” he asked, his voice cracking.” Not just from these guys, I mean, but really save her? Stop her from killing herself and her brothers?”

J’nah regarded him steadily. “Then she’ll need to actively ally herself with me. I can give J’nel a field promotion, giving him the captaincy of her vessel.
